With a proven track record as a State Representative, Melanie has been unwavering in her advocacy for the 29th district and the broader community. Throughout her tenure, she has tackled legislative challenges spanning education, healthcare, criminal justice reform, racial reconciliation, housing stability, and economic development.

During Melanie’s tenure as Vice Chair of the Housing, Community Development, and Veterans Committee from 2019 to 2020, she worked tirelessly to address housing affordability and ensure our veterans receive the support and resources they deserve. Concurrently, she had the honor of serving as Chair of the Black Members Caucus, where she championed policies to promote racial equity and justice.

In her role as Deputy Majority Floor Leader from 2020 to 2022, she facilitated critical legislative processes, ensuring that the voices of our community were heard and represented in every decision. Her commitment to diversity and inclusion continued as she became Chair of the Member of Color Caucus, where she focused on amplifying the concerns and contributions of legislators of color. During the same period, she recognized the importance of social equity in emerging industries and co-chaired the Social Equity in Cannabis Task Force. This position allowed her to advocate for fair opportunities and representation within the cannabis industry, ensuring that its benefits were accessible to all communities, particularly those historically marginalized.

Currently, as Vice Chair of the Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee for the session, she is dedicated to sustainable practices that protect our environment while supporting our agricultural community. Her work in this committee underscores the commitment to balancing ecological health with economic growth.
